    ABOUT US

    Owner/Operator: Steve Cossette

    History:

Steve Cossette grew up spending most of his days in the family Body Shop/Boat Repair business, but was always particularly drawn to the upholstery repair and restoration aspect of the business.

During high school, Steve attended Hennepin Technical College-completing two years of auto mechanics. After graduating from Mound High school, Steve also attended The Brown College for a year of schooling in electronics.

Following his formal education, Steve worked for Twin Cities Tops and US Convertibles; working his way up to Manager. They made Custom Convertible Conversions (expertly converting factory hard top vehicles to convertibles), as well as creating proto-types for convertible conversion after-market kits.

After three years with Twin Cities Tops and US Convertibles, Steve’s knowledge, experience and expertise was far surpassing his position as a simple manager and in 1991 he decided to go into business for himself. In August of 1991, Steve started Aero Upholstery and moved into a 2500 sq. ft. building at Tamarac Ave in Long Lake, MN.

Steve’s first few years in the upholstery business went amazingly well. His reputation for high quality and expert workmanship grew quickly enabling him to hire employees, which gave Steve the breathing room to take some time off for more formal, technical education.

In 1993, Steve attended the Marine Canvas Training Institute in Palmetto, Florida. It was there Steve acquired his expertise in making bimini tops, enclosures, dodgers, spray hoods, cockpit and full covers. Steve realized the importance of having this training down in Florida; their teaching stresses the importance of how to make canvas products which are able withstand years of exposure in the harsh environment of salt water and the extreme intensity of the sun.

Over the next eight years, Steve’s reputation in the Upholstery business continued to grow. He became renowned in the Twin Cities area, and his business grew right along with it. This created a need for even more space; a new facility that could accommodate for more vehicles and bigger boats. Aero Upholstery’s reputation was reaching far and wide. People were bringing their classic cars and boats to Steve from the Dakotas, Iowa, and Wisconsin and even from as far away as Canada.

In 2001, Aero Upholstery moved just up the road from where they were to West Wayzata Blvd; expanding operations into a 15,000 sq. ft. building. Yet, Steve was feeling a need to offer a more comprehensive list of services to his clientele and decided in 2002 to purchase an existing business; Marine In Motion. This gave Steve the ability to not only offer Upholstery services to owners of both small and large boats, but also to offer transport, shrink wrapping and winter storage, full mechanical services, fiberglass and gel coat repair and complete detailing services. Essentially, the two businesses completely complimented one another and this enabled Steve to bring together all of the knowledge and skills he had acquired over the last thirty-five years and offer full and complete services; something almost unheard of in the Twin Cities area. Both Aero Upholstery and Marine In Motion were doing quite well over the next 9 years, until the unthinkable happened; two catastrophes.

In the middle of winter, 2011, due to the weight of an over abundance of snow, a very large portion of the roof collapsed in the 130,000 sq. ft. building in which Steve leased his 15,000 sq. ft. space. Between that and the economy tanking as it did, Steve decided to sell off Marine In Motion; down-size into a smaller facility and get back to basics-concentrating on what he does best; expertly crafted and the highest quality of upholstery work.

So, after 21 years of doing business in Long Lake, MN, in 2011, Aero Upholstery re-opened its doors at a new, better equipped 7500 sq. ft. facility in Medina, MN. It has a ceiling reaching to 14 feet in height to better accommodate larger boats, and not one, but two garage doors, for safer movement of both cars and boats in and out of the shop. And, as always, Aero Upholstery continues to have the most up-to-date equipment and tools to get the job done and done right.
